How to downgrade iOS 5.1 to iOS 5.0.1, 5.0, 4.3

Downgrade iOS5.1

If the tethered jailbreak at iOS 5.1 has been a cause of concern for you or be it just the battery woes that come with 5.1 – you might find n number of reasons to downgrade your iPhone’s OS back to your beloved older versions. In this tutorial we will show you how to do a fresh install of iOS5.0.1 or below on your iDevice.

This guide will help you downgrade iOS on for iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPad 1, iPod touch 3 and iPod touch 4 and you have to have the SHSH blobs of the firmware you wish to downgrade to saved (figure this out from Cydia)

To downgrade from iOS 5.1 to iOS 5.0.1 or iOS 5.0

  1. Download the latest version of iFaith
  2. Download the official iOS 5.0.1 stock version from
  3. Build a signed firmware file by selecting Build *signed* IPSW w/Blobs.
  4. Browse for the SHSH blobs file for your current device.
  5. Now select the stock firmware which you would have downloaded in Step 2
  6. Once complete, iFaith will have the custom firware with the SHSH blobs incorporated, ready for use.
  7. Enter DFU mode using iFaith
  8. Use iTunes to restore to the custom firmware created from steps above.

To downgrade from iOS 5.1 to iOS 4.3.5, 4.3.4 or 4.3.3

  1. Download the iPSW file of the firmware version you wish to downgrade to
  2. Connect your iPhone/iPad/iPod touch to your PC or Mac, and start it in pwned DFU mode using the latest version of Redsn0w
  3. Edit your hosts file. On a PC it is located under Windows -> System 32 -> drivers -> etc and on a Mac it is under /etc/
  4. Add the following 74.208.105.171 gs.apple.com line to the end of it.
  5. Start iTunes. Now, hold down Shift key(Win) or Alt key(OS X) and click on Restore to locate the downloaded iOS 4.x iPSW.
